 Eid-ul Adha - Eid Khabeer!

Eid-ul-Adha is a three-day long celebration, four according to some, and commemorates the struggle of Prophet Abraham, peace be upon him, and his family.  A family of FAITH - BELIEVERS with Tested Iman!
What faith Ismail - the young believer had in belief that if Allah has ordained his death, he was willing to die.  What faith - Hajjar - a mother  had to allow her husband to sacrifice her son!  What faith Prophet Ibrahim - a father - had in belief that if Allah had ordained the sacrifice of his son, he was willing to do so.  Look at the IMAN of this family!!

Many of us have made hajj or umrah and even some of us have been blessed to take our children.  But please Brothers & Sisters, do not make the Eid a day to come to a quick prayer and return to work.  Allah has ordained in the Holy Quran that he has appointed rites and rituals for all people.  This is OUR HOLIDAY.

Things we can do for EID and even in preparation for Eid-ul-Adha

DAY ONE
Make Hajj come to life in your home
Let your children and teens make a Kaaba replica - either something small that can be a centerpiece on a table or large - a centerpiece for a room.  Box, black material, gold fringe from the dollar store - be creative.  A black poster or bag placed on the wall with gold paint.  Blow up a picture from the internet.  They key is to make it a FAMILY affair.

DAY TWO
Invite a Hajji or Hajja and LISTEN, reflect and understand
What better way to learn about Hajj from a personal perspective than to hear it from someone who's been there and done it?  If you have performed Hajj, invite family to re-share the event with you.  If not, invite someone who has. Always include your family - many youth make Hajj and Umrah.

DAY THREE
Develop Eid cards and decorations
Do  this as a family project.  Make your OWN memories about Hajj.  Also let the youth make cards for their non-muslim friends to explain it as well.  Make your home special - it our time, our place.

DAY FOUR
Tell it like it is: the story of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him)
Is there a storyteller in the family? If not, is there someone who loves to read aloud?  Let one of your children Read the story of Prophet Ibrahim to everyone after dinner or after Salatul Magrib or Isha.

DAY FIVE
TV Time
There are a number of movies about the Hajj that your family can look at or a movie about Islam.  In "The Message" we see the life struggles of the early Muslims.  In "Malcolm X" we see a part of American History.  The movie "Eight Centures of Islam in America" is a wonderful selection of the long history of Islam.  There are movies on Netflix and even movie to buy from area stores or on-line.   You can look at Muslim channtels like http://www.mohammedschoolstv.org/ or YRACTV.  Look at live feeds from hajj http://www.myworldwebcams.com/events/the_hajj.html or go to any youtube or type watch hajj live on your internet.

DAY SIX
Radio Time
Your family can listen to or read old lectures from New Africa Radio.  Call in or google blogtalk radio on Imam WDM, AM360 and others.  There are live call in shows and radio broadcasts that you can listen to on this topic.

DAY SEVEN
Practice the Talibiya and follow what is happening on-line
Hajj is now in full session and you can go to website and actually watch the pilgrims as they circumvent the Kaaba online.  Also, we all should regularly remember Allah by saying La ilaha illa Allah (there is no g-d but Allah), Allahu Akbar (Allah is great), and Alhamdu lillah (Praise be to Allah).
Also, learn the Talbiyat (what pilgrims recite during Hajj -) Labbayka Allāhumma Labbayk. Labbayk Lā Sharīka Laka Labbayk. Inna l-Ḥamda, Wa n-Niʻmata, Laka wal Mulk, Lā Sharīka Lak.   "Here I am at Thy service O Lord, here I am. Here I am at Thy service and Thou hast no partners. Thine alone is All Praise and All Bounty, and Thine alone is The Sovereignty. Thou hast no partners."  Also everyone should learn and recite the Takbir of Eid!  that we make as we wait for the start of the Eid prayer.  Make sure your children know this takbir that has been recited by Muslims for a millenium and a half.

DAY EIGHT
Plan for Eid
Make sure you have clean clothes to wear.  Have pretty new scarves and dresses for your girls and nice suits for boys.  Eid is not a time for flip-flops, jeans and t-shirts.

Check and see what are the Eid Community wide activities planned for the community.  Also, you can plan on having a party or gathering at your home.  Include the teens and young adults to get together and skate, bowl or go to the movies.  Don't just let all activities be one of sitting or entertaining small children - it is a celebration for the whole family!  Have as many casual affairs as you do dress up!

Also, plan your family's EID menu - are you eating out, cooking special food, enjoying others.  Is your family in a position to slaughter this year?  Will you do it yourself or pay someone?  How will you distribute meat?  What will you cook with your portion?

DAY NINE
Fast & read aloud the Last Sermon of the Prophet
Did you think fasting ended with Ramadan? If so, you're mistaken.
It is recommended to fast on this day. Muslim narrated from Abu Qatadah that the Prophet said: Fasting the Day of Arafa (the ninth day of Zul Hijjah) will be credited with Allah by forgiving one's sins of the previous year and the following year.

Have a big family Iftar - just like you did during Ramadan.  The 9th of Dhul Hijjah will be a weekday, so allow for this when breaking fast.

Also, this is a good time to read the last khutbah of the Prophet Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him).  His last Sermon was delivered on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah. There are so many lessons in the Prophet's Last Sermon (Khutba).  DIscuss main points and how they relate to our lives as Muslims today.  This is a great time to read it as a family together.

DAY TEN
Alhumdulillah, its the first day of EID
Rise early and dress for the Eid in your best or new clothes.  If you have decorated your house, put out some incense so it will smell nice when you return.  If you have made gifts or cards to share with others, remember to pack them.  If you have children in school, make sure you take them out.  Pick up your child at the local college if need be and of course - call off work if you have not already scheduled this as a vacation/holiday day.

Attend the collective Eid Salat.  It is a day for unity, not separation.  Attend scheduled activities.  Visit gravesites of deceased family members and Muslims.  Visit the houses of those who are having gatherings.  As in the Hajj, let there be no 'wrangling'.  Invite non-Muslims - they will never know how Muslims do things unless or until we do it!

If you have not had a chance to do some of the things listed above - do them on EId day - look at an Islamic Movie or video, watch the hajjis live on line, have a 'telling' party for those who have attended Hajj, make sweet desserts to share, etc.  The key is to INVOLVE your children and family as this holiday is so special and unique as a testament of the IMAN of parents and children.  SubhanAllah!

Muharram

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, and peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets and Chief of the Messengers, and upon all his family and companions.

Allah's sacred month of Muharram is a blessed and important month. It is the first month of the Hijri calendar and is one of the four sacred months concerning which Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

"Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so it was ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them, four are sacred. That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein ... " [Al-Qur'an 9:36]

Abu Bakrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said:

"The year is twelve months of which four are sacred, the three consecutive months of Dhu'l-Qa'dah, Dhu'l-Hijjah and Muharram, and Rajab Mudar which comes between Jumada and Sha'ban." [Reported by al-Bukhari, 2958]

Muharram is so called because it is a sacred (muharram) month and to confirm its sanctity

Ashura - projected date December 15, 2010

The virtues of fasting 'Ashura

Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, said:

"I never saw the Messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace, so keen to fast any day and give it priority over any other than this day, the day of 'Ashura, and this month, meaning Ramadhan." [Reported by al-Bukhari, 1867]

The meaning of his being keen was that he intended to fast on that day in the hope of earning the reward for doing so.

The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:

"For fasting the day of 'Ashura, I hope that Allah will accept it as expiation for the year that went before." [Reported by Muslim, 1976]

October News
Muslim Heritage Month

Students identify the Muslims responsible for the historical examples in  President Barack Obama's speech below

President Barack Obama

Speech in Cairo, Egypt

June 4, 2009

“As a student of history, I also know civilization's debt to Islam. It was Islam - at places like Al-Azhar University - that carried the light of learning through so many centuries, paving the way for Europe's Renaissance and Enlightenment. It was innovation in Muslim communities that

      developed the order of algebra;

      our magnetic compass and tools of navigation;

      our mastery of pens and printing;

our understanding of how disease spreads and how it can be healed.

Islamic culture has given us majestic arches and soaring spires; timeless poetry and cherished music; elegant calligraphy and places of peaceful contemplation. And throughout history, Islam has demonstrated through words and deeds the possibilities of religious tolerance and racial equality.

I know, too, that Islam has always been a part of America's story. The first nation to recognize my country was Morocco. In signing the Treaty of Tripoli in 1796, our second President John Adams wrote, "The United States has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of Muslims." And since our founding, American Muslims have enriched the United States. They have

     fought in our wars,

     served in government,

     stood for civil rights,

     started businesses,

     taught at our Universities,

     excelled in our sports arenas,

      won Nobel Prizes,

      built our tallest building, and

     lit the Olympic Torch.

And when the first Muslim-American was recently elected to Congress, he took the oath to defend our Constitution using the same Holy Koran that one of our Founding Fathers - Thomas Jefferson - kept in his personal library.
